Event: An Integrated U: Trauma, Grief and Pathways to Healing

An Integrated U: Trauma, Grief and Pathways to Healing course is designed for primary care physicians, specialists, mental health providers, nurses, dietitians and other healthcare professionals interested in integrative medicine. This one-day conference will focus on the impact of trauma and grief on health and highlight how integrative medicine can promote whole-person healing for patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers. Faculty experts will discuss best clinical practices and review the latest research and scientific developments on the use of integrative medicine.

 

 

Endocrinology

Event:  10th Annual UCLA Diabetes Symposium

Date: November 12, 2022

 

The 10th Annual UCLA Diabetes Symposium will bring together speakers from the endocrinology division, other DoM divisions, and experts from across the country to discuss current best practices in caring for patients with diabetes. Topics include updates in care, guidelines, and new medication classes, as well as addressing co-morbidities including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and chronic kidney disease. Guest speakers from the DoM include Dr. Anjay Rastogi from nephrology, Dr. Karol Watson from cardiology and Dr. Saab from digestive diseases.

 

Infectious Diseases

Event: 19th Annual HIV CME Symposium: Tough Decisions Made Easier

Date: February 2023

 

The Tough Decisions Made Easier conference invites physicians and health care professionals to learn current information on the clinical management of HIV related issues that include care management of patients with HIV, or patients who have resistance to antiretroviral medications, and using antivirals for HIV prevention in high-risk patients. At the conclusion of the one-day course, participants will have an understanding of long-acting injectable HIV therapies, advantages and disadvantages of PrEP agents, progress towards a cure for HIV, challenges of clinical management of COVID-19 in patients with HIV.

 

 

Sleep Medicine

Event: 6th Annual UCLA Sleep Medicine Day

The 6th Annual UCLA Sleep Medicine Day, sponsored by the Frisca L. Yan-Go Lectureship in Sleep Medicine, will be held at the UCLA Faculty Center. The Frisca L. Yan-Go, MD Lectureship in Sleep Medicine was established to honor Frisca’s 25 years of service at UCLA and for her stewardship in developing the UCLA Sleep Disorder Center from a one-doctor clinic to a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program. The lectureship brings outstanding national and international sleep specialists, visiting faculty, and consultants to the UCLA Sleep Medicine program. The following Frisca L. Yan-Go Endowed Lecturers will be presenting the topics below: 

  • Chris Colwell, PhD, Circadian rhythm disruption and neurodegenerative diseas
  • Eric Kezirian, MD, MPH, Optimizing surgical outcomes in obstructive sleep apnea
  • Constance Fung, MD, MS, Sleep disorders with co-existing nocturia
  • Joshua Cho, MD, PhD, Treating Insomnia: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Based therapies via telehealth

 

 

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Event: 2nd Annual Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Symposium

Date: March 11, 2023

In Spring 2022, the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine hosted the inaugural Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Symposium. They will host the second symposium in March 2023 that includes a virtual and in-person CME course which invites pulmonologists, cardiologists, critical care physicians, internists, cardiac and thoracic surgeons, as well as allied health professionals who care for patients with advanced lung disease or who refer patients for lung transplantation. Participants learned state-of-the-art therapies for patients with end-stage lung disease, including medical and interventional approaches and lung transplantation.

 

 

Digestive Diseases

 Event: 11th Annual UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology and Hepatology Symposium

Date: March 17-18, 2023

 

The UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology and Hepatology Symposium invites gastroenterologists, hepatologists, GI physician assistants, GI nurse practitioners, GI nurses, GI fellows and other allied healthcare professionals to a hybrid (in-person or virtual) event to learn about the latest in liver, inflammatory bowel diseases, esophageal, functional GI, colon and rectal, pancreaticobiliary, endoscopy. In March 2022, the conference included experts speaking topics that include IBS and disordered eating, functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis, EUS-guided ablation in the pancreas, approaches to drug-induced liver injury and cell mediated hepatitis, and many more.

Rheumatology

Event: UCLA 39th Annual Carl M. Pearson Frontiers of Rheumatology Symposium

Over the course of three days, rheumatologists, physicians, healthcare professionals, and fellows meet for the Annual Carl M. Pearson Frontiers in Rheumatology Symposium to discuss the latest developments in the treatment for autoimmune and muscoskeletal conditions. In 2022, guests heard from faculty experts on the usefulness and place of diet in cannabis in the medical armamentarium, how to incorporate the placebo effect into their practice, using osteoarthritis data in their practice, latest treatments in systemic sclerosis, and new developments in the treatment of gout and vasculitis.   

 

 

Cardiology

 Event: 10th Annual Heart Failure Symposium

On Saturday, September 10th, 2022, in coordination with Office of Continuing Medical Education, UCLA hosted their 10th Annual Heart Failure Symposium. This program focused on advanced heart failure therapies and interventions in complex cardiac patients. The agenda included a wide variety of important topics such as long-term cardiovascular complications from COVID-19, Mobile ECMO, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, breakthroughs in digital health and may more. The Office of Continuing Medical Education, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA designated this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM.

Attendees from California and 10 other states made up an audience of over 300 family practitioners, internists, cardiologists, pediatricians, nurses and many other healthcare professionals taking care of heart failure patients.

 

Event: California Heart Rhythm Symposium

UCLA hosted the California Heart Rhythm Symposium at the Luskin Center on Sept 10, 2022. This annual conference jointly sponsored by UCSF, UCSD and the UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center provides an interactive forum where leaders in the field present the latest advances in the management of cardiac arrhythmias with a focus on translating these into practice and patient care. There were 175 attendees at this in-person conference.

 

Geriatrics

Event: Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine & Board Review

The division of geriatrics hosted its annual Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine & Board Review which is a leader in providing physicians, pharmacists, and other health professionals the essential knowledge and skills to care for older patients. In this course, participants gain an understanding of the principles of geriatric assessment, pharmacology, rehabilitation, key aspects of specialty care as they pertain to older patients, identify social problems related to aging and the approaches to these problems, and recognizing recognizing geriatric syndromes such as dementia, delirium, incontinence, pain management, and more.

 

 

 

Clinical Nutrition

Event: Personalized Nutrition in Primary Care 2022: Nutrition in Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Survivorship

The Personalized Nutrition in Primary Care 2022 CME course provided primary care physicians foundational information about how nutrition can have a key role in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship. By developing a personalized nutrition plan for patients with cancer, it is possible to minimize side effects from cancer treatment, help patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight, enhance their quality of life, and prevent or correct nutritional deficiencies. This course prepares primary care providers with the skills and tools needed to support oncology care.
