HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Families As Allies is a statewide organization that works with families who may receive constant calls from school about their child’s behavior. The goal is to provide resources that best fits each individual child, so they can be their best selves in and out of the classroom.

“We respond to about 300 new callers every year here,” said Dr. Joy Hogge, Executive Director of Families As Allies.

Dr. Hogge says more than half of the calls they receive are about school-related issues.

Families are linked with MAP teams, which work with families to address their child’s needs and offer options that best suits their child.

Henry Moore, Director of Family-Driven Practice at Families As Allies, leads one of the largest MAP teams in Hinds County. “We get what families are going through.”

Families As Allies also provides training with schools.

Dr. Hogge says, they also help families understand their rights, connecting families and schools in meaningful ways.

“The goal is to keep them out of a psychiatric or acute care. To keep them at home, to keep them out of alternative school. To keep them out of youth court detention center,” said Moore.

“When families feel listened to, and they have someone in their corner, there’s no stopping them,” said Dr. Hogge.
